I believe that Mann used his characters to symbolize the changes that were taking place with regards to the Monarchical form of government at the time.

Through Klaus Henrich and his sister Ditlinde, we find revolt against the mores of the time. The latter marries a commoner which turns out to be a disappointment.

Her husband, Philipp, is despised for being a tradesman. The former's interest to an American woman also causes a stir in the Kings Court.

The book is also satirical in form which makes it quite interesting. I think it is readable and quite informative.

He does, they marry, and the old world is invigorated with new blood and ambition. Elmore Leonard once said that he left out the parts that people skip, and that that was the key to his success.

Mann doesn't leave out anything, but his greatest virtue and his greatest vice. I'm curious to reread Buddenbrook Mann is always interesting, but this one seems almost frivolous for him.

I'm curious to reread Buddenbrooks, a book I remember with great fondness. Sep 02, Sheri-lee rated it really liked it. This was a nice, light Thomas Mann read.

But, true to Mann's form, there is interesting commentary on roles of state, etc. I like that the good people are truly good people.

Just couldn't. Jan 08, Andrew rated it really liked it. Enjoyable in an "I-know-exactly-what's-going-to-happen" way. Mann writes beautifully and I was captivated as ever by his page-long descriptions.

They just don't have the English translation listed in Goodreads. I did read Tonio Kröger and Death in Venice in German years ago, and they were life changing books for me that really helped my love of literature to blossom.

Then when I got older and my German got worse, I read Felix Krull and Buddenbrooks, both great books, in English, and finally The Magic Mountain, which is one my favorite books of all time, also in English.

Mann has an ability shared by few wr OK, I didn't read it in German. Mann has an ability shared by few writers to portray characters who are archetypes, but at the same time are real and charming.

He also has an intriguing view of the artist as an eccentric and often unhappy but driven person that I have only ever seen repeated in Maugham's unflattering portrayal of Gauguin in The Moon and Sixpence.

Royal Highness is an early work that rehearses the themes that Mann develops more fully in his later books.

Klaus Heinrich is a classic German aristocrat, very good at form and order, and more than a little stiff; Emma is an equally classic American, strong, spontaneous, sarcastic and contemptuous of authority.

Both are essentially good people trapped and unhappy in the isolation of their high positions, but eventually finding a way to happiness in a storybook marriage.

The minor characters in the book are all also trapped and isolated each in their own way, so that isolation is seen as being a part of the human condition, not just a malaise of the spoiled rich, that only the lucky few are able to rise above.

The artist makes a brief appearance in the person of Axel Martini who wins a poetry prize and has a curious official meeting with Klaus Heinrich, who seems to expect the poet to be someone entirely different from the driven and isolated character he finds, who is a precursor of Mann's later artists.

This isn't Mann's greatest book, because the story and characters don't yet have the fluency of his later works, but it has enough of the elements that I love in Mann's writing to make it a thoroughly enjoyable read.

Mar 18, Ron rated it really liked it Shelves: classics. This delightful novel by Thomas Mann about a prince of a tiny European principality and the only daughter of an American millionaire falling in love is in my opinion usually underrated.

That might have something to do with the perception of the serious literary icon and Nobel Prize winner Thomas Mann and his linguistically imposing novels like Buddenbrooks: The Decline of a Family or The Magic Mountain with their overwhelming atmosphere.

However, Mann remains a master of the German language and This delightful novel by Thomas Mann about a prince of a tiny European principality and the only daughter of an American millionaire falling in love is in my opinion usually underrated.

However, Mann remains a master of the German language and the prominent themes of his work, the feeling of loss and decline, the resignation and general impotence to reverse entropy and and self-indulgement, almost gluttony in enjoying the morbid beauty of an over-sophisticated and exhausted Old Europe while remembering the past greatness, all this infuses this novel, too.

In addition, as every perceptive reader of Thomas Mann might confirm, a morbid sense of humour infuses most of his works. The objection, this novel is essentially a juvenile story or a fairy tale is not unjustified, even though there is some death and depression to be found.

This, however, does not detract from the amused analysis of a society which realizes its approaching end, an amusement tinged with the omnipresent sadness at the inability to deal with it.

Maybe his presentation of a fairy tale ending was Mann's comment on the only way he saw how this development might find a happy ending, in a children's story.

A surprisingly timely look at a bankrupt nation and an economy in crisis, Thomas Mann captures both the rigid European aristocracy and the burgeoning optimism of American re-emigres in this novel.

Mann sprinkles together elements of some of Germany's greatest 19th century writers in this tale: the fairy-tale magic of the Brothers Grimm runs just below the surface, the economic might of Marx looms.

And in His Royal Highness, Mann has created a character who lets us into the dilemmas faced by the ar A surprisingly timely look at a bankrupt nation and an economy in crisis, Thomas Mann captures both the rigid European aristocracy and the burgeoning optimism of American re-emigres in this novel.

And in His Royal Highness, Mann has created a character who lets us into the dilemmas faced by the aristocratic class at the turn of the 20th Century and seen in Downton Abbey, among other sources : they were mostly bankrupt, in thrall to bankers and the whims of industrialists.

The love story is light--and it is one that I would recommend to my economist friends, as Klaus Heinrich and Imma Spoelman spark their love over the study of economic policy manuals and algebraic equations.

And in the end, the kingdom proves to be "too big to fail" and all live happily ever after. Apr 20, Erjon 7 rated it it was amazing Recommends it for: Thomas Mann fans.

This novel,it even does not sound like a Mann novel! I mean the happy ending strange rare is a happy ending in Thomas Mann novels! I mean in the ending with those quotes about love and life!

It sounded to me like an G. Marquez not an Mann novel! Anyway I give it a Five just because it's Mann. But this isn't one of his great works, but a good and elegant one.

I like most everything Thomas Mann writes You could call it the "Downton Abbey" of Germany. It is set at the end of the 19th century and tells the story of a prince born to a German state, perhaps Hessen.

The state has not kept up with the times, the castles are crumbling. They have not invested in modern industry.

The peasants are starving and cutting down the forests. After much protocol, the rest develops as expected. The story is about a German prince son of the Grand Duke of a bankrupt country falling in love with an immigrant billionaire's daughter, and of course facing the necessary hindrances to win her love
